Sand Tank Mountains Expedition, Day 2

We woke early at the prodding of a nearby mocking bird (not one of the expedition members), and were soon on the trail continuing west towards Gila Bend. We took the time to explore several side routes, most leading to old mine sites or catchments. One of my goals for the day was to find Tom Farley's cabin, the location of which had faded from my memory after visiting it 6 years prior.

We continued along the Sand Tank wash, taking routes that ran in the well traveled wash, or along the surfaces above it. The trails today were much easier to travel in this area. We decided to take the wash back to the highway (8). The wash ended at a well graded road, and a quick trip to the highway. Since the day was still young, we wanted to try one more location, that might bring me back to the elusive (at least for me) Farley's Cabin.

We drove on the highway for a short distance to the next entrance to the Goldwater range at Grey's well. This route heads directly south, and immediately looked familiar. At nearly 4 miles you come to a range gate (combination required); after driving through the gate and over a short rise, you are at the cabin and its accompanying artesian spring (Mesquite Well). The cabin is very well preserved, no doubt from the limited access to the area. A short, faint trail continues south and crosses the mountain putting you back on the main trail leading into the range or back out to the highway. This short trail has heavy brush.

We took the main trail back north, back to the highway at Big Horn and the remains of the old Petrol station that serviced the Yuma to Tucson Highway. Small sections of pavement remains, and the Petrol Station continues to suffer from the weather and abuse.

We ended our adventure here, airing up our tires for the long (for some) trips home. This area leaves much to be explored...
