We drove on the highway for a short distance to the next entrance to the Goldwater range at Grey's well. This route heads directly south, and immediately looked familiar. At nearly 4 miles you come to a range gate (combination required); after driving through the gate and over a short rise, you are at the cabin and its accompanying artesian spring (Mesquite Well). The cabin is very well preserved, no doubt from the limited access to the area. A short, faint trail continues south and crosses the mountain putting you back on the main trail leading into the range or back out to the highway. This short trail has heavy brush.
We took the main trail back north, back to the highway at Big Horn and the remains of the old Petrol station that serviced the Yuma to Tucson Highway. Small sections of pavement remains, and the Petrol Station continues to suffer from the weather and abuse.
We ended our adventure here, airing up our tires for the long (for some) trips home. This area leaves much to be explored... |
