Equipment Review Guide

The proper selection of equipment for expedition travel is essential for the safe, efficient and reliable support of vehicles and personnel across remote and demanding landscapes. Equipment that is appropriate for expedition travel must meet minimum criteria for reliability, durability, capability and quality. In addition Expeditions West evaluates an overall Expedition rating for the product which accounts for serviceability, weight, security and ease of use. All of these categories are factored equally when determining a total score.

The scores are presented as a value of 1-5, with 5 being the best possible score. Each point is shown as a full color compass rose. The watermarked compass rose is used as a placeholder, showing the overall scale.

Description

Capability

The evaluation of Capability asks critical questions of the designs ability to improve performance of the expedition system.

Does the item tested perform as advertise?
How much does the item improve and integrate with the system affected, and deliver improved trail performance and efficiency?

Example: A selectable rear locking differential can significantly improve the capability of an expedition vehicle, and integrate well with other systems.

Durability

Can the item evaluated function under extreme conditions, to its design limits, over extended periods. Can it survive wet and humid environments, hot and dusty conditions, drops and shaking without failure.

Quality

This is an audit of the overall quality of the finished product and its assembled components. A measurement of actual results to advertised results are performed when possible. Fit and Finish are also equated in this measurement, along with any quality certifications the manufacturer has obtained (ISO, QS9000, etc.)

Reliability

Reliability is often difficult to assess over a short test cycle, and of a limited sample of units. However, predictive reliability can be assumed based upon unit quality, manufacturers reputation and available feedback from other users.

Value

Something that is of high quality and presents exceptional capability and durability can also be of considerable value. Value is a measurement of the investments return to the expedition system.

Expedition Rating

This rating is much less empirical by nature, and requires the collective experience gained from evaluating the product.

Does the item tested contribute to the overall expedition system?
It it as light and durable as possible?
Is it easy to use with cold and wet hands?
Is it intuitive and safe to use by all party members?
Etc.

With limited payload, it the item tested of significant enough importance to warrant using the few remaining pounds left for equipment?
